Gasparilla Island &
Gasparilla Island State Park
Beautiful Gasparilla Island is a
barrier Florida Gulf Coast
Island located in
southwest Florida. Known for its
beauty and abundant, preserved
Florida Gulf Coast Beaches,
Gasparilla Island is a favored
place to visit during your Florida Island Vacation.
Locals and Spanish historians
usually debate how the island
received its name. It is
believed that the island
was named for legendary pirate
captain Jose Gaspar (1756-1821),
who made the island his base
during the 18th century. As
local lore tells, Gaspar
obtained a substantial amount of
treasure from his pillaging and
it is believed he hid most of
the treasures on the island.
Others argue that “Gasparilla”
appeared on maps that predated
Gaspar the pirate and that the island was named
for a Spanish missionary named Gaspar or Gasparillo.
Gasparilla Island is unspoiled
and beautiful; a place where
you to getaway and relax,
and a place beautiful enough to
host an elegant Wedding on Gasparilla Island. Home to
several great beaches that are
perfect for shelling, fishing,
swimming and picnicking,
Gasparilla Island Florida
provides families with plenty to
do. Spend the day exploring
Gasparilla Island State Park,
located in the island’s largest
city, Boca Grande, or check out
the Gasparilla Maritime Museum
at Whidden’s Marina. Bordered by
Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island
Sound, Gasparilla Island State
Park is a wonderful place to
visit and see the native
wildlife. Here visitors can go
snorkeling and see the many
different marine animals such as
West Indian manatees, tortoises,
oystercatchers, and several
varieties of native birds. The
maritime museum is located on
the National Register of
Historic Places and is housed in Whidden’s
Marina. The museum pays tribute
to the fishing community that
thrived on the island more than
a century ago and is a great
place to find more information on
Boca Grande Fishing
and the history of their area.
There is a $2.00 per vehicle
charge to Gasparilla Island
State Park and its many
amenities. The park includes two large picnic areas, many different
beaches and trails that lead to
unspoiled areas of the island.
View the Historic Port Boca
Grande Lighthouse, a lighthouse
museum and gift shop located at
the southern end of the island.
The park is open from 8:00 a.m.
until sundown year around. The
Port Boca Grande Lighthouse is
open for viewing from 10:00 a.m.
until 4:00 p.m., Monday through
Saturday and 12:00 p.m. to 4:00
p.m. on Sundays.
